Indigenous Science and Culture Did you know? S ydney is built upon some of the oldest occupied territory in the world. Before it was named Sydney, it was called Gadi. Gadigal means men of the grass tree. Gadigelleon means women of the grass tree. The Gadi (grass tree or xanthorrhoea australis) is a source of weaving material, resin that is used as a powerful adhesive used in boat making, and nectar for drinking, among other things. The Cadi can live for 300-450 years, however land clearing at European settlement has severely reduced the number of trees.
